Tips for What to Do with Your Broken Jewellery

Updated: May 4, 2023

It is often a surprise to our customers that they can earn a decent sum from their broken jewellery. Even if it is tangled, broken or has pieces missing - there’s still value to be had.

This is because most of the value in an item of jewellery comes from the materials that they are made of, as opposed to their functionality. So selling your broken jewellery can be more worthwhile than you might think.

Recycle your jewellery for its precious metal content

If your jewellery is made out of gold, platinum, palladium or rhodium - no matter what condition it is in, it will still retain a fair value. Whilst silver is less valuable, it still holds a reasonable material value. There are many online options for selling precious jewellery, including WeBuyVintage. We test everything for precious content and ensure that the offer we make you reflects the true value of your items.

Repair it

If you aren’t too keen on selling, you might want to consider repairing your jewellery instead. Some elements can fatigue over time, such as the prongs which hold gemstones in place, but jewellers can fix this for you.

Similarly, if your item is missing a gemstone, jewellers can replace the missing stones. Diamond stones are most expensive, followed by emeralds, taaffeite and grandidierite.

Don’t clean it!

That’s right, we strongly advise you to NOT clean jewellery yourself unless you know what you are doing. Gold and other precious metals can begin corroding when they come into contact with certain cleaning chemicals, which makes them look dull. Using a proper cleaning solution can remove this dull layer and make them look as good as new again, but many buyers simply prefer to buy it as it is.

At WeBuyVintage, we will buy all of your old jewellery - whether it is in perfect condition, tangled condition, or entirely broken - giving you instant cash for items that you can no longer use.
